‘Today Congress has become directionless’: Himachal Cong committee chairman Harsh Mahajan joins BJP

Incumbent Himachal Pradesh Congress President Harsh Mahajan joined the BJP on Wednesday and claimed the opposition party had become “visionless, directionless and leaderless”.

A former state government minister and close aide to former chief minister Virbhadra Singh, who died last year, Mahajan lashed out at the leadership of Congress in the state, saying he was highly governed by “maa-beta” as in Delhi.

“I was in Congress for 45 years…today Congress has become directionless, leaderless. There is no vision and no grassroots workers,” he said after joining the saffron party.

Singh’s wife, Pratibha Singh, is now the state congress president and their son Vikramaditya Singh is a party MP. Nothing was left for Congress after the death of the former chief minister, he told reporters.

He joined the BJP in the presence of Union Minister Piyush Goyal and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for providing a “strong government”.

Goyal said the BJP will write the history of the state by retaining power after the elections likely to be held later this year. Mahajan had been in Congress for more than four decades.

Welcoming Mahajan, Goyal said he held important positions in Congress and maintained a clean image. The BJP government in the state will be repeated, he claimed.
