SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) – As the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted everyone’s lives over the past year and a half – the country’s undocumented community has been among the hardest affected by the pandemic.

The undocumented community, which tends to work on the front lines in high-risk jobs, had limited options to stay home or go to work despite fear of spreading the virus.

In San José, the undocumented community continues to be a key economic force for the city.

According to the city, about 25,000 undocumented immigrants live across San José.

In the wake of the pandemic, the city reports that five zip codes, mainly on the east side of the city, have been the most affected by COVID-19.

The postal codes most affected by COVID-19 are: 95122, 95116, 95127, 95121 and 95111.

The city says these zip codes contain large immigrant populations.

Council member Maya Esparza now calls on the city to call on Congress and President Joe Biden to preserve funding for pro-immigrant policies, including a path to citizenship and to ensure the undocumented community is included in the federal budget resolution.

“With a supportive presidential administration, this current moment represents a historic opportunity to break decades of political impasse and enact long-awaited reforms to our county’s immigration system that will benefit us all,” Esparza said in a memo before the city council on Tuesday. Meet.

“Now is the time to act boldly and aggressively on immigration reform, and we, as a city, must urge
our leaders in Congress and our president to act now, ”added Esparza.
