Former CM Oommen Chandy to head Congress Committee for Kerala Assembly Elections

Senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Kerala, Oommen Chandy, will lead a group of Congress leaders who would oversee the upcoming Assembly elections. The Congressional Oversight Committee would consist of ten members who may have some additional inclusions later.

The Congress Committee will include Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) Chairman Mullappally Ramachandran, Kerala Assembly Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala, Former KPCC Chairman K Muraleedharan, Congressman Lok Sabha K Sudhakaran, Secretary General of Indian Congress Committee (AICC) Tariq Anwar, Secretary General of AICC (Organization) KC Venugopal, Acting Chairman of KPCC Kodikunnil Suresh. Shashi Tharoor will probably be inducted later.

AK Antony, a member of the Congress Working Committee, will lead the election campaign and will be in Kerala from mid-February until the end of the Assembly elections.

Antony speaking to IANS said: ‘The Congress party will have a collective leadership and most of the candidates will be fresh, young faces. The Congress will come back strong in the Kerala Assembly elections in 2021.”

Congress Leader KC Venugopal, speaking to the media, said, “Congress is on the right track and those who rejoice in recent wins in local polls are living in a fool’s paradise. The Congress party has already made all the basic preparations and there will be many new faces among our candidates.”

The Congress high command does not want the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections to be a repeat of recent polls by local state bodies in which the party and the United Democratic Front (UDF) were beaten.

Congress’ main coalition partner in the UDF, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), also welcomes the return of Oommen Chandy as leader of the Congress party.

IUML National Organizing Secretary and MP ET Mohammed Basheer in an interview with IANS said: “Chandy is a seasoned politician and his return as leader of the Congress party will be a a boost to the morale of Congress and the Muslim League. frames. He is a grassroots leader who knows the pulse of the people and it is a welcome development when it comes to the Congress, the Muslim League and the UDF.”
