Ernakulam district congress committee general secretary joins leftist camp

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) was shot in the arm on Thursday when Mr. B. Muraleedharan, Secretary General of the Ernakulam District Congress Committee (DCC) and three-time councilor representing Vennala and Padivattom in the Kochi Corporation, broke his ties to Congress and announced that he would work for the victory of the Left Front candidate in the Thrikkakara by-election.

Mr. Muraleedharan had previously expressed his difference of opinion with the Congress leadership over the way the selection of candidates was carried out for the by-election. “There was no consultation or discussion. The announcement was made on the eve of a scheduled meeting at DCC to discuss the bid,” he said. The Hindu.

The Congress leadership, in particular opposition leader VD Satheesan, displayed an anti-democratic approach, he alleged.

Mr Muraleedharan said he had in the past opposed in party forums the candidacy of PT Thomas as well as Thrikkakara because there was no need to replace then-incumbent lawmaker Benny Behanan. Despite this, he worked for the party’s candidate victory and shared a bond with the late Thomas and his family. But the late lawmaker was not even available in the constituency, he said, adding that more congressional workers would join the left in the coming days.

Responding to the development, Mr Satheesan said Mr Muraleedharan had worked for Congress until the other day. “When Oommen Chandy was here the day before, he went to meet him. It seems that an intermediary took him to the left camp. In hindsight, he was responsible for the loss of five UDF divisions in the City Corporation,” Satheesan said.
