Congress: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee suspends Raha MP Sashi Kanta Das


The Assam Pradesh Congressional Committee (APCC) suspended Raha Sashi Kanta Das MP after pledging his pledge to politically support the BJP-led government in Assam.

APCC Chairman Bhupen Kumar Borah suspended Das from the Congress party pending disciplinary proceedings with immediate effect for repeated violation of party discipline and engaging in anti-party activities.

Das met with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently, fueling speculation he might join the BJP.

Speaking to the media, Sarma said, “Das will stay in Congress and support the BJP. There are different models. He will maintain relations with the deputies of the BJP.

Das after meeting with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Chief Minister was very positive on various development issues. “I have known Sarma since the days of his Congress. He is a dynamic leader, ”said the congressman.

He said he had met with the chief minister about some development projects related to his constituency and was still a member of Congress.

“Meeting the State CM does not mean that I will join the BJP. I met him because I want development in my constituency, ”said the congressional lawmaker.

Recently Mariani Congressman Rupjyoti Kurmi resigned from the party and joined the BJP, Congress leader Sushanta Borgohain in Assam joined the BJP. MP Thowra Borgohain resigned from the assembly. Phanidhar Talukdar has left the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

Kurmi, Borgohain and Talukdar contested the October 30 by-elections on BJP tickets and won their respective assembly seats.

Farewell ballots will likely be held for Majuli after Union Minister and former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal resigned from the house following his election to Rajya Sabha.

Congress in this year’s Assembly polls won 29 seats, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) won 14 seats. The BJP increased its seat from 60 to 62.
