Channi-led Congress government played with PM Modi’s security in Punjab, BJP says

The previous Congress government in Punjab played with the security of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP said on Thursday after a Supreme Court-appointed committee issued its report on the breach of security during its visit to Punjab in January.

Alleging a “conspiracy”, party leader and Union minister Anurag Thakur said chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and the director general of police “were missing” during Modi’s visit.

On January 5, Modi’s convoy was stuck on a flyover due to a blockade by protesters in Ferozepur, after which it returned from Punjab without attending any events.

On January 12, the top court had appointed the committee to investigate the breach, saying the issues could not be left to “one-sided investigations” as they needed “independent minds trained by justice” to investigate.

In its report, the committee said that the then Chief Superintendent of Ferozepur Police failed to fulfill his duty even though sufficient force was available.

“Prime Minister Modi’s convoy was stopped in the middle of a bridge, just 100 meters from the protesters and 10 km from Pakistan. his party leaders in Delhi,” Thakur said.

“Anything could have happened to the Prime Minister. Two minutes was enough,” he said, pointing out that Modi had to wait on the bridge for 20 minutes as Channi was busy on the call.
