After the MLA Congress, 12 party councilors resign

Jalore: The death of a nine-year-old Dalit boy in Jalore district of Rajasthan has sparked a wave of resignations from the ruling Congress party, with one MP and at least 12 councilors quitting over atrocities against the Dalit community .
At least 12 of Baran City Council’s 25 Congress councilors, including a ward councilor, tendered their resignations on Tuesday in support of party MP Panachand Meghwal, who resigned a day earlier, following the boy’s death dalit.

The Dalit boy died after being beaten by his private school teacher for touching a pot of drinking water in Jalore on July 20. He died while being treated at a hospital in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on August 6.

Meghwal, an MP for Atru in Baran district, sent his resignation to Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on August 15, saying he had no right to remain a lawmaker if he could not protect his community.

“When we fail to protect the rights of our community… we don’t have the right to stay in office. After listening to my inner voice, I am resigning as an MP so that I can serve the community without any position,” Meghwal said in his resignation letter.

Even as the country celebrates 75 years of independence, atrocities against Dalits and other underprivileged classes continue, he said. “I am hurt watching the atrocities. I cannot express my pain in words (at) the way my community is being tortured,” he said.

Accused teacher Chail Singh has been arrested. The state government has announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh for the victim’s family.

Congress Leader Sachin Pilot condemned the incident and demanded action against officials who charged the schoolboy’s family.
