After the MLA Congress, 12 party councilors resign
The Dalit boy died after being beaten by his private school teacher for touching a pot of drinking water in Jalore on July 20. He died while being treated at a hospital in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on August 6.
“When we fail to protect the rights of our community… we don’t have the right to stay in office. After listening to my inner voice, I am resigning as an MP so that I can serve the community without any position,” Meghwal said in his resignation letter.
Even as the country celebrates 75 years of independence, atrocities against Dalits and other underprivileged classes continue, he said. “I am hurt watching the atrocities. I cannot express my pain in words (at) the way my community is being tortured,” he said.
Accused teacher Chail Singh has been arrested. The state government has announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh for the victim’s family.
Congress Leader Sachin Pilot condemned the incident and demanded action against officials who charged the schoolboy’s family.
